He Became One of Us On Feb 21, 1921 there was a doctor who performed an appendectomy. The doctor was Dr. Evan Kane and he had performed over 4,000 of these surgeries in his 37 years of medical career. But this was to be an unusual surgery for two reasons. First, this was the first time that a local anesthesia had ever been used in major surgery. He was convinced that this was safer than putting them completely to sleep. So Dr. Kane searched for a volunteer or a patient who would be willing to undergo this major surgery while under a local. Finally, a volunteer was found, and on that Tuesday morning the operation began. The patient was prepped and wheeled into the operating room. A local was applied and just as he had done several times before, he cut into the tissue and removed the appendix. There was only minor discomfort and he recovered quickly and was dismissed two days later. Dr. Kane proved his theory and a local became an alternative and even a preferred alternative. The second unusual thing was that the patient was the Doctor himself. Yes, Dr. Kane operated on himself and he became a patient to convince the patients to trust the doctor. But isn't that what Jesus did for us? The Great Physician voluntarily became one of us. He placed Himself in our shoes. He left the glories of heaven to live on the earth as one of us. And he suffered pains and feels our fears. So when we hurt, we have someone who understands...and you will then have confidence to go to him for healing.
